Single sentence description:
Best keyboard layouts are fun and practical, but nobody can deny the pure-evil appeal of the worst layout for typing English copy.
Full description:
Don't be fooled by the seemingly random appearance of the HSWDNO layout. Using simulated annealing and my typing effort model, described in more detail in my X-Fu layout submission or on the carpalx keyboard layout optimizer page, this layout increases typing effort over QWERTY by 240%. The layout has been created by remapping only the character keys to make it appear less exotic.
The HSWDNO layout makes words like zyzzyvas (effort=2.5) very easy to type but words like hetter (effort=36.0) extremely difficult. Interestingly, zyzzyvas is one of QWERTY's most effort-bearing words (effort=24.5).
If you dislike your cubicle buddies, need to discipline your programmers, or slow down the Java prima-donnas, implement a corporate-wide switch to HSWDNO and watch the workers' compensation forms flow in. If you are a human manager, you may consider the 5 steps to typing hell program, which dishes out the punishment one key swap at a time. Each week implement the following keys swaps: E/Z (+46% effort), A/X (+25% effort), S/Q (+22% effort), H/Y (+12% effort), I/B (+7% effort). The final SWZRTH layout increases effort by 165% over QWERTY. Good employees and attractive office personnel should be started on the 5 steps to typing heaven program.
